Book: 99 Tips For Creating
Simple and Sustainable Educational Videos
The research is clear: online learning works best when faculty build regular, positive, and interactive relationships with students. A strategy that helps forge such a relationship is the use of videos. Student satisfaction and course engagement levels also increase with the use of instructor-generated videos –the subject of this book.
Beginning by outlining the different types of videos you can create, and what the research says about their effectiveness, Karen Costa explains how they can be designed to reinforce learning, to align with and promote course outcomes, and to save you time across your courses. She then describes how to create successful videos with commonly available technologies such as your smartphone, and without a major investment of time, demonstrating the simple steps she took to develop her bank of videos and build her confidence to deliver short, straightforward learning aids that are effective and personal. Embedded QR codes in the text enable you to view sample videos and screencasts that bring the book’s advice to life as you read. If you’ve been wanting to include videos in your teaching but haven’t found the time or confidence, this book will help you to develop a simple and sustainable video development process, supporting both your success and the success of your students. |
Kind Words
Karen Costa brings a wealth of knowledge, insight, and expertise to the online learning community. Her desire to grow and help others grow is contagious. She is a joy to work with and an individual who brings joy to her work. I’m happy to make a recommendation for Ms. Costa.

Karen Costa, you were one of the first people to introduce me to trauma-informed pedagogy and to model it for me not only in that session, but the work you do every day and the support you have shown me and others. I took so much from that session that informed my practice immediately and I have never stopped starting my online meetings/sessions with asking how people are feeling today.
Dr. Maha Bali, Associate Professor of Practice at the Center for Learning & Teaching at the American University in Cairo (AUC)
Karen consistently provides resources that are student-centered yet practical for instructors of all ability levels to implement in their online courses. I truly appreciate that I can return to her advice over and over and find new perspectives on how to apply it.
Ana Maria Young, Associate Director of Learning, Innovation, & Course Development at Becker College
Alongside the help and hope that Karen Costa continues to infuse into the higher education landscape, and online education in particular, she is also trailblazing in virtual community building, creating space and place for educators (and other professionals) to share their voices and feel supported. She isn't afraid to say it like it is, make waves, and initiate change — all while making others feel welcome and included in these efforts. She is a wonderful person and professional and continues to inspire me as an educator, writer, and faculty development professional.

Karen provided our team of both Greek and American faculty members a 'how to transition from in-person to remote learning workshop.' She listened to our faculty needs, provided feedback, supported our existing work, and gave us a ton of resources and recommendations to help us in the future. Two months later, our faculty still talk about her workshop!
Leighanne Penna, Associate Dean of Student Services, American Farm School in Thessalonki, Greece
Karen's online resources were a tremendous help to us as we shifted our coach education trainings online. They gave us a great framework to get started, and then when I reached out for more information, she was enormously helpful in connecting us with the answers and questions that we needed to take our work to the next level. With such a detailed and prepared mind like Karen's, it's refreshing that she was also remarkably open to new questions and idiosyncrasies of our programming, and helped us adapt what she knew to what we needed. She is a great teacher and support.
